What Astrophotography Can Teach Eye Care Practices About Cybersecurity: Protecting Patient Data, Preventing Downtime, and Spotting Threats

Recently, our team purchased a few telescopes to start photographing the moon, galaxies, nebulae, and other objects in the night sky.

As we learned more about astrophotography, one part of the process stood out: image stacking. It offered a useful way to explain something we regularly discuss with eye care practices.

One quick look rarely shows the whole picture.

When most people see a clear image of a galaxy, it is easy to assume the telescope captured one perfect photograph. But astrophotographers often take hundreds of individual exposures and stack them together. Each image captures a little more light and detail. When those images are carefully combined, the noise fades and the full picture becomes clearer.

One image gives a glimpse. The layers reveal what is actually there.

Cybersecurity in an eye care practice works in much the same way.

One Quick Look Does Not Show the Whole Picture

An eye care practice might confirm that antivirus software is installed, see that the firewall is running, and assume the network is secure.

That is a little like taking one photograph of a distant galaxy and assuming it shows the entire scene.

A quick review can uncover an outdated computer, a missing security update, or a workstation without proper protection. But it only shows what is visible at that moment.

It may not reveal that backups have been quietly failing for weeks, that an employee's Microsoft 365 account is experiencing repeated login attempts, that a former employee still has access to cloud applications, or that a computer connected to a diagnostic device has stopped communicating with its security software.

Individually, those issues may not seem urgent. Viewed together, they tell a more important story about the security of the practice.

Cybersecurity is not just about whether computers appear secure today. It is about understanding what is happening across your technology environment over time.

Protecting a Practice Takes Layers

Astrophotographers do not rely on a single exposure to create a detailed image. Eye care practices should not rely on one security product to protect everything either.

A firewall is important, but it cannot stop every threat. Endpoint protection can detect malicious activity, but it cannot compensate for weak passwords, unprotected email accounts, poor access management, or unreliable backups.

Strong cybersecurity typically includes multiple layers working together:

  • Managed firewalls

  • Endpoint protection and threat detection

  • Multifactor authentication

  • Email filtering and phishing protection

  • Security updates and encryption

  • Employee security awareness training

  • Account and access management

For an eye care practice, those protections may extend across front-desk computers, doctor workstations, Microsoft 365, cloud applications, practice-management and EHR systems, imaging equipment, and other network-connected devices.

Each layer provides a different piece of information. A firewall may detect unusual traffic. Endpoint security may show suspicious activity. Email protection may reveal a phishing attempt. Login records may show access from an unexpected location.

Together, those pieces create a much clearer picture.

Monitoring Adds Context

Why do I need ongoing security monitoring? Why can't I just set everything up once and be done?

It is a fair question. Once your firewall, antivirus, backups, multifactor authentication, and other security tools are in place, it can feel like the job should be finished.

The challenge is that your technology environment keeps changing.

Employees come and go. Passwords get compromised. Software changes. New devices are added. Updates are missed. Backups can fail. Security tools can stop reporting. And cybercriminals continue changing how they try to gain access.

That is why monitoring matters.

A one-time security review gives you a snapshot. Monitoring reveals patterns and changes over time.

Cyberattacks do not always happen all at once. An attacker may spend days or weeks testing passwords, attempting to access email accounts, or gradually increasing access before launching a more visible attack.

A brief inspection may happen when things look normal. Continuous monitoring can reveal what happened before and after that moment.

One failed Microsoft 365 login may not mean much. Hundreds of failed attempts across several accounts could indicate an attack. A workstation temporarily going offline may be routine, while a computer repeatedly losing contact with its security tools may need investigation.

Just as stacked images reveal faint details in the night sky, security information collected over time can reveal activity that would otherwise remain hidden.

Cybersecurity is not something you simply install and forget. It needs to be watched, maintained, and adjusted as your practice and the threats around it change.

More Data Does Not Automatically Mean More Clarity

Astrophotography still requires someone to separate useful detail from visual noise. Cybersecurity is similar.

A practice may receive alerts from firewalls, Microsoft 365, backups, email systems, and security tools. Collecting those alerts is not the same as understanding them. Someone must determine what is routine, what is unusual, and whether several small warnings point to a larger problem.

The tools collect the information. Experienced analysis turns that information into something useful.

Preparation Matters

Security also works best when the foundation is prepared before a problem occurs.

Practices should know what devices, software, accounts, and cloud services they have, who can access critical systems, and whether backups are working. Former employee access should be removed, and new devices should receive the proper security settings.

Preparation cannot prevent every incident, but it can make problems easier to detect, contain, and recover from.

Downtime Is More Than an IT Problem

For an eye care practice, cybersecurity is not just about protecting computers. It is also about keeping the practice operational.

Imagine arriving at the office and discovering that employees cannot log in, the schedule and patient records are unavailable, diagnostic images cannot be accessed, and a ransomware message appears on several computers.

Even if no patient information is stolen, the disruption can be significant. Appointments may be delayed, staff may be unable to work normally, and doctors may lose access to information they rely on for patient care.

That is why cybersecurity is more than a technology expense. It is part of protecting the continuity of the practice.

Protecting Patient Information Requires the Full Picture

Patient information may exist across EHR and practice-management systems, imaging platforms, email, billing tools, cloud applications, servers, and workstations.

Protecting it requires more than antivirus software. Practices need to understand where sensitive information lives, who can access it, how it is protected, how it is backed up, and what happens when an employee leaves or a device is replaced.

Cybersecurity and HIPAA compliance are closely connected, but neither is accomplished through a single checkbox or product.

A practice can have excellent protection in one area and still have significant risk somewhere else. The goal is to see the environment as a whole.

The Picture Gets Clearer Over Time

Our early attempts at astrophotography have not all looked like the polished images you see online. Some have been blurry. Some have contained more noise than detail. Some have required us to adjust the equipment and try again.

But every attempt has helped us refine the process.

Cybersecurity works the same way.

A strong security program is not created through one scan, one product, one HIPAA checklist, or one annual assessment. It develops through multiple layers of protection, regular reviews, continuous monitoring, employee awareness, and ongoing improvement.

A snapshot may suggest everything is fine.

A complete picture shows where the risks are, how systems are behaving, whether protections are working, and what needs attention next.

For an eye care practice, the clearer that picture becomes, the better positioned you are to protect your patients, your staff, your data, and the operation of your practice.

Sometimes, seeing what is really there simply requires gathering enough information—and knowing how to stack the pieces together.
